Start your playoff beards

The River Pirates have made the playoffs for the first time since going to nationals in 2008. Locking up the 4th seed by defeating the Leftovers in the final game with stellar goaltending by sub goalie Troy of Battlecats fame, they look to make another deep run in the playoffs.

Check the side calendar for the playoff schedule. The first game is putting the Pirates back in the ring against the Leftovers on Thursday the 12th.

2010-11 Season comes to a close

The updates on this site may have trailed off, but the season kept on going until the end. The River Pirates finished with 19 points, and 6th in the AHA C1 North division. This does not tell the tale of the season well, because two more wins would have had the Pirates in 4th place and in the playoffs. Overall, it was a good season for the team, and a great group of guys with many new faces came together for the most fun season the team has seen in a long time. After two rough years in B2, winning some games helped a great deal in that area too.

The Bruno Bobble award was a new tradition this year. Hopefully he will hold up for years to come as each game we honor one player to made a difference. Looking back on the whole year, the entire team deserves a group bobble for one massive accomplishment: most penalty minutes in C1 North! With 264 total minutes, it was decidedly a team effort to get there -- except for Nate, who got zero minutes. What a jerk. The team was not number one in penalty minutes league wide, but there is always next year.

Check the calendar for weekly pick-up. We're on Tuesdays for the foreseeable future, so be sure to make it out.

Overtime win topped with a hatter by Malmquist

The game was quite back and forth this past Monday night with the River Pirates and the Mutiny trading leads to eventually lead to overtime tied at 6 a side. Josh Malmquist led the team down the strech with a pair of goals and the eventual winner in overtime to complete the hat trick. That deserves a bobble head. Still, the Pirates are amid a mess in the overall standings. By giving up a point to the Mutiny by going to overtime, the team still sits in 6th place, one point behind three other teams, and two points behind second place. It is a close race to see who makes the playoffs in a very tight division. The team needs to keep winning in regulation if they hope to see games past March 20th.

01/18 • River Pirates 7 - Mutiny 6 (OT) (GWBB Josh Malmquist)

RP Shutout win and another close game vs Venom

Before everyone went off for Christmas break, the Pirates continued with their dominant play and shut down the Ligers in a huge 4-0 victory. Defense and offense was clicking, making great plays, and winning puck battles. Huge props to the BBGW goalie Alex Shkolnik for an outstanding game and shutout.

After spending a few weeks eating too much and not playing hockey, the team came back out against the Venom. The rust was apparent early after giving up a few goals, but the Pirates shook it off and battled hard the rest of the game. The result was a loss by one point, but a very close game. The previous game's Bobble recipient Alex gave the game award to Scotty and the defense for their great work around the net.

01/03 • River Pirates 1 - Venom 2 (BB Scott LeBlanc and the defense)
12/20 • River Pirates 4 - Ligers 0 (BBGW Alex Shkolnik)

River Pirate Game Update

It's been a few weeks since the last update, so here's what's been happening with the Pirates.

Coming off of two tie games, the team fell to the Ice Hounds after a slow start that put them behind and it became too large of a hole to dig out of. The next week, the Pirates played a tight game against the Taz Devils and pulled out their first win of the season. This marked the first time the team had played with a full bench and that proved to be important in this back and forth game. Finally, this past Tuesday the team was firing on all cylinders and pulled out a huge win against the Norsemen. There was a great feeling in the room before the game and everyone came to play. Solid effort for the Pirates, and also marked another impressive feat: no penalties. Kudos to the team for that and the win.

A new tradition has started on the team. Whoever scores the game winning goal is awarded with the Andrew Brunette bobble head as a trophy until the next game. The inaugural recipient of the award was Glen Hanson for his winner against the Taz Devils. The Bruno Bobble Game Winner (BBGW) will now be noted after the game scores below.

12/14 • River Pirates 12 - Norsemen 5 (BBGW Pat Woods)
12/07 • River Pirates 5 - Taz Devils 4 (BBGW Glen Hanson)
11/28 • River Pirates 3 - Ice Hounds 7

Come out to the final Pirates game until the new year this coming Monday at Richfield as the Pirates take on the Ligers for game two of the three game series this season.

Team Calendar Issues

I am not totally sure what is going on but the full calendar on the site for our game and pick-up schedule is having some issues. When looking at it in Google Calendar, it seems fine though, and the mini calendar on the home page is correct as well. I'll post again once it is fixed.

For reference, our next game is tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec 7 at 9:30pm at Richfield 2. The next pick-up is, as always, Thursday at 10:15pm, Tartan Arena.

-------

Update 1: It's Google's fault and they're on it. It is only occurring in the full month view. Hopefully the fixed gets rolled out to us soon.

A flurry of scoring still ends in a tie

The Pirates, again with a short bench, pulled out a tie against the Mutiny this past Saturday. There was lots of scoring on both sides. This game could have easily been a loss for the team, despite solid offensive chances, due to receiving 48 shots on goal. A huge thanks goes to their sub goalie who stood on his head and made flailing saves most of the game. This second tie now gives the Pirates two points total in the standings, which hopefully is leading to their first win in the near future.

11/20 • River Pirates 7 - Mutiny 7

Roll your turkey filled bodies over to Breck this Sunday as the teams clashes with the Ice Hounds.

Pick-up will resume again next week at Tartan.

A Wild Tie on Sunday Night

A close game of back and forth ended in a tie for the River Pirates as they faced off against the Wild last Sunday. Aside from some players racking up time in the penalty box, the Pirates got on the score sheet with team newcomer Nate Cornell popping both goals into the net, one while shorthanded to keep the team in the game. A short bench continues to plague the Pirates as they search for a game with a full roster to help win the energy battle. We hope to see you this Saturday in St. Louis Park as the Pirates take on the Mutiny.

11/14 • River Pirates 2 - Wild 2

Close game but no points for the win column

A late Saturday game with a short Pirates bench ended with a narrow win for the Venom. A close match for the vast majority of the game including a penalty shot and some scuffles by the net.

The River Pirates started the new season last night with a game against the Ligers. Everyone was pretty rusty and it took a while for the team to start playing together. After a bad first period, the Pirates fought back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the game 5-5 in the second period. Alas, things deteriorates again in the third. With only one goal left in them, the team eventually fell to the Ligers.
